The Gap Between Education and Employability
India's education and skilling ecosystem continues to face a significant challenge: qualifications do not always translate into workplace readiness.
NITI Aayog's August 2026 skilling report identifies five recurring barriers to effective skilling: information and value perception, access, funds, learning and delivery models, and structure/governance. The report also highlights that 80% of higher-education students cite lack of practical experience and industry exposure as a major pain point.
Further, NITI Aayog's March 2026 working paper, Education and Skilling for Employment: From Credentials to Learning Outcomes, reports that the overall employability of post-school degree holders stood at 56.4% in 2026, while B.Com graduates recorded an employability rate of 62.8%.
These findings reinforce an important reality: a qualification may open the door, but practical capability helps a learner succeed beyond it.
